What a preview cannot tell you about fitment

By NICE RIM Updated 5 min read

A preview is a visual answer. Fitment is a dimensional and mechanical question. The two are related, but one does not replace the other.

  • A preview can show the design, finish and approximate proportion.
  • It cannot measure brake clearance, offset or suspension travel.
  • Confirm the complete wheel and tyre specification before buying.

What the preview can answer

The preview is good at the question a catalog photo cannot answer: how does this wheel look on this car? It can help you compare spoke designs, finishes and approximate wheel size before you spend money on a set.

It is also useful for narrowing a shortlist. Pick the design that works visually, then move to the fitment checks with a clear direction.

What it cannot answer

A photo does not know the thickness of the brake caliper, the shape of the inner barrel or how much the suspension compresses under load. A wheel can look correct at rest and still rub on the arch liner, the strut or the brake caliper when the car is moving.

The preview also does not read the door jamb sticker, the load rating or the tyre size. Those are separate checks and they belong to the car, not the image.

  • Offset and arch clearance.
  • Brake caliper and inner barrel clearance.
  • PCD, centre bore and wheel hardware.
  • Tyre size, overall diameter and load rating.
  • Suspension travel and steering lock.

What to check before buying

Write down the car’s original wheel and tyre specification, then compare the new wheel’s diameter, width, offset, PCD and centre bore. Check brake clearance and arch clearance separately. If the car is lowered or has a big brake kit, those checks matter even more.

If the numbers are close but not identical, measure the car before ordering. A physical test fit is still the most reliable check, especially at full lock and under load.

Why NICE RIM states this clearly

A good-looking preview is useful, but it should not be mistaken for an approval. NICE RIM is a visual reference, not a fitment calculator or a replacement for a wheel specialist.

Keeping that boundary clear makes the tool more useful: you can choose the look with confidence and still do the physical checks that keep the car safe.
